His goal is to make refined, structured and site-transparent Bordeaux blends from each of his vineyards on Red m ountain, with a limited use of oak that lets the fruit speak for itself. The Camerata is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc, hailing from the Cara m ia estate vineyard. The vines, which were planted in cobble rock, clay and basalt soils in 2004, seem to have really hit their stride with ten years of age, making the 2014 (in Ben Smith's own words) "Perhaps the most complete Camerata to date." If you haven't experienced Cadence, then it's time to pull the trigger. These are some of the most important, age-worthy Bordeaux blends being produced in the u nited States today, and at a remarkably fair price. ✦ Cadence Camerata Cara Mia Vineyard 2014 VM 94 » $54 "...This captivating, juicy Cabernet finishes with a slowly building whiplash of subtle fruit sweetness and tannins…A beauty in the making." Stephen Tanzer (1712199) C OM i NG iNTO T H ei R O WN Washington State wines have really come into their own. a t one time it was just a handful of producers who were able to win the hearts of critics. Yet now, after an amazing string of great vintages, the region has found a new place in the u nited States market. Washington State winemakers excel at producing Bordeaux blends and Syrah that rival the best from California, with an undeniable stamp of terroir, mountain fruit intensity, and remarkably fair pricing.
