Originally planted by the Greeks, the region thrived up until Phylloxera ravaged the vineyards of europe in the late 1800s. at that time, most families left, leaving behind a storied past and ruins that held winemaking relics from a time long gone. With the turn of the last century, the region began to reawaken, stirred to life by producers such as Terre Nere, who saw the remarkable potential of this diverse terroir. However, at that time on Mount etna, you could count the number of operational wineries on one hand. Today, the ever-expanding wine-growing scene supplies a diverse mix of styles and producers seeking to plant their stakes. even the Gaja winery from Piedmont has secured a piece of this volcanic terroir, and it's only so long before the collector market catches on–and prices catch up. The time to plant your stakes and build a collection is right now. THe TiMe iS NOW H owever, up until 2010, the family continued to grow grapes and make wine, but sold it to other producers. That is until Francesco Tornatore realized the true potential beneath their feet and created the winery as it is today. The Pietrarizzo hails from etna's northern slopes (which contain the "Grand Crus" of the region), in a vineyard that's 700 meters above sea level, planted in poor rocky soils of volcanic origins. These Nerello mascalese vines ripen throughout the long growing season, which is extended by the cooling influences of altitude and the Peloritani mountains further to the north. Tornatore works to harvest at ideal ripeness and maintain the natural minerality and terroir characteristics of the site by aging in cement, followed by twelve months in large neutral barrels. The resulting wine is absolutely gorgeous. ✦ Tornatore Pietrarizzo etna Rosso Sicily italy 2015 We 95 » $44 "...Crushed violet, dried herb and dark spice aroma…elegantly structured, juicy palate…alongside smooth, polished tannins" Kerin O'Keefe (155503) WiTH eTNa iN THeiR BLOOd Tornatore has a history of vine growing on etna that goes back to 1865, with an understanding of the terroir and vines that is unparalleled in the region.
