| 121 MORRELL FINE WINE AND SPIRITS V ISIT u S AT MORRELLWINE .c OM cALL 800.96.WINES (800.969.4637) ITA l Y G erardo had the courage to take the vineyards that his family had farmed for generations and began to bottle their own wine as Cantine del Notaio. This was no easy decision in a region that had suffered through economic strife and the exodus that followed. Yet Gerardo was determined to make something of his family's heritage and with the vines that they had lovingly tended. From vineyards spanning the v ulture's most renowned growing areas, and from vines that are up to 100 years old, Cantine del Notaio created l a Firma. Following a long maceration, the Aglianico of l a Firma is aged in a combination of wood barrels for two years within volcanic Grottoes. It emerges as a wine of place, as its earth and smoky elements remind you of its volcanic origins, mixed with undeniable elegance, power and longevity. It's an Aglianico befitting the moniker Barolo of the South. ✦ Cantine del Notaio a glianico del Vulture La Firma 2012 W e 93 » $54 "New leather, ripe black plum, carob, baking spice and balsamic aromas jump out of the glass. The round full-bodied palate delivers mouthfuls of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and coffee set against a backbone of velvety tannins that lend a smooth, polished nuance to the firm structure." Kerin O'Keefe (1555182) Ba ROLO OF TH e S O u TH Welcome to Basilicata, which borders Campania and is one of the few regions of i taly which has a coastline on two of its borders. i t's here, at the foot of an extinct volcano and well up into its black ashen soils, that we find the a glianico del Vulture and a small number of producers who are creating some of i taly's most important wines. However, one who stands out among them is Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti of Cantine del Notaio.
