This balance was achieved by the Pra winery with their 2008 Amarone della v alpolicella. When Graziano Prà first took over his family's vineyards in the early nineties, it was Soave, not Amarone that he used to establish himself. However, his interest in v alpolicella had him constantly on the lookout for an opportunity in the region. He wanted something that would set his wine apart, a location that would inject a quality of terroir into the wine. He found that terroir at an elevation of 450 meters, where the runoff of an ancient glacier had deposited a high percentage of active limestone into the soil. Graziano immediately set to work, planting the vineyard in 2001 and employing organic practices. With a desire to respect tradition, he planted Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and o seleta. The resulting wine is not what the average taster would expect from Amarone, as even in its youth, there's a level of freshness and saline-minerality that is unmistakable. The high percentage of limestone also helps to bring elevated acidity, making a Pra Amarone both savory and vibrant. Now, ten years after its vintage date, the 2008 Pra has matured into a gorgeous expression of the region, its terroir, and the passion of the man who wanted more from Amarone. ✦ Pra a marone della Valpolicella 2008 (Library Release) VM 95 » $80 "The 2008 Amarone della Valpolicella captures the essence of this gorgeous Amarone vintage...
