It's because of this that he created the highly-regarded Super Tuscan, Flaccianello. However, this success wasn't gained overnight, and is very much the result of Giovanni's relentless work to perfect Flaccianello's blend and aging regimen. The original source of fruit was a single-vineyard of the same name, "Flaccianello della Pieve", until the 2001 vintage when the decision was made to create a blend of the estate's best fruit. This was largely the result of acquisitions that Giovanni made of choice parcels within the Pecille district of Panzano. What's more, with the increase of fruit quality, Giovanni realized that Flaccianello would benefit from an extended time in barrel, pushing the regimen up to 24 months. It's hard to imagine Flaccianello growing into an even better wine than it was before, yet vintages over the last decade have been wowing consumers and critics alike. Flaccianello is truly World Class. ✦ Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2015 JS 96-97 » $124 "A powerful, full-bodied red with a silky and minerally character. Hints of smoke and wet earth. Great length and beauty." James Suckling (1555208) Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2014 VM 96 » $115 "...the translucent finesse of the vintage is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, chocolate and spice infuses the sweet, creamy finish..." Antonio Galloni (1555174) Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve 2013 VM 98 » $118 "...fabulous, riveting wine that grabs hold of all the senses... Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is still very much in its inky, primary stage." Antonio Galloni (1555135) T H e eVOL u T i ON OF F L a CC ia N e LLO When we speak of Giovanni Manetti and Fontodi, it's usually regarding the portfolio of stunning Chianti Classico he produces. However, Chianti isn't what brought this iconic estate its original fame.
